WHAT I BRING
A big lesson from early in life.
When I was in fourth grade, my teacher, Mrs. Jarret, told my parents, “I would never be more than a below average student.” Of course, this shocked my parents. How could a teacher predict what an eight-year-old would amount to? When I heard this, I was crushed. How could one comment shared decades ago, at the age of eight, affect me so much?
Because the words from Mrs. Jarret’s mouth hurt. These words haunted me for a very long time, and even as I write this, I am reminded that words can really affect people—for good and for bad. But then something happened. Instead of letting the words continue to sting the very core of my being, they drove me to push myself.
So why am I telling you this, something that took place a long time ago, especially a person who might be interested in working with me? Because I have GRIT! As Angela Duckworth so eloquently captured in her bestselling book Grit, The Power of Passion and Perseverance, “The secret to outstanding achievement is not talent, but a passionate persistence.” I learned at a very early age, if I worked hard and didn’t give up just because someone said something that hurt me or an obstacle got in my way, I would find a way to succeed.
And that is just what I did. I went on to get my Master’s in English, finishing at the top of my class, so I could learn how to better communicate my words and shape my messages. I taught English in college for a couple of years, providing thoughtful comments to my students to encourage them, not discourage them, and I always used a pencil and not a red pen, as with a pencil, you can erase and change things. From teaching, I went on to the corporate world and learned I had an ability to shape messages in business as well. (DEVELOP MORE.)
